Deep Cuts: Indie

Elliot Smith New MoonNew Moon is a 2-CD/2-LP compilation album by Elliott Smith (1969-2003), released in May of 2007 by Kill Rock Stars. It contains 24 previously unreleased songs recorded between 1994 and 1997. New Moon peaked at number 39 in the UK and number 24 in the U.S. selling about 24,000 copies in it's first week.

A significant portion of the sales proceeds went directly to Outside In, a social service agency for low-income adults and homeless youth in Portland, Oregon, the city where Smith resided for a major portion of his life as a performer and perpetual outcast.

To no one's great shock, Smith suffered from depression, alcoholism, and drug addiction. These topics often appeared in his lyrics. At age 34, he died in Los Angeles from two stab wounds to the chest.
