Deep Cuts: International

In the land of Revolution, Tibet, Tiananmen, Falun Gong and Mao Hanggai represents an exploration into uncensored cultural history. Hanggai plays from the heart with a powerful re-creation of Mongol folk music. Their music reflects the many who have cut their village roots and moved to the souless city-centers of China.

The combination of evocative vocal performances, lyrics almost totally about beautiful women and countryside scenes, ethnic throat singing, minimal percussion, and stringed instruments both electric and acoustic make Hanggai a rare and wonderful experience.
