There are quite a few good indie, rock and Americana shows coming to Indianapolis this Fall and Winter. Many are off-beat, original and interesting acts that are on tour during the last of good traveling weather and won't be seen again in central Indiana for many months!

Trampled by Turtles are an intense blue-grass folk started in Duluth, Minnesota known for their intricate performances of traditional instruments. The group has found a place on Billboard's bluegrass charts and stayed for for 52 consecutive weeks. Their music has been featured in TV shows including Squidbillies.

Local H is a longtime alternative rock duo, formed by Scott Lucas (lead vocals, guitar, bass) as a trio in Zion, Illinois outside Chicago in 1987. They've their share of struggle and massive success with "Bound To The Floor" in 1996. The band, now on Slimstyle Records, is touring in support of their new album Hallelujah! I'm a Bum.

Mason Jennings is an excellent musician and performer of alt-country and bluegrass music who began his career as the bar band for the 400 Bar in Minneapolis. Today, at 37, he has 15 nationally released albums and a documentary titled "Use Your Van".

The Buffalo Killers are a Cincinnati based band who bring back to life the psychedelic and rock-folk rhythms of Buffalo Springfield and CCR. Their track "Get Together Today" takes layers of dust off the late 1960's rock movement and re-charges it with urgency.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band is a three-piece American country and blues band from Brown County, Indiana, living in a rural area north of Nashville, IN. They play more than 250 dates per year at venues ranging from bars to festivals. To date, they have released eight albums. On August 7th 2012 they released their newest album "Between the Ditches".

Deep Cuts: Alt-Rock

The Hiders' 2008 release "Penny Harvest Field" is a follow-up to their brilliant Valentine released in 2006. The Cincinnati based alt-rock act's musical influences seem to range from alt-country to mainstream rock containing Fogerty, Petty, Greenwood (Radiohead) and Neil Young. Their live sound is true to their studio sound which is kind of a seamless arrangement of guitar and vocal harmonies.

The band is fronted by a Cincinnati music veteran songwriter/guitarist Billy Alletzhauser who is a former member of Ohio indie rock group The Ass Ponys. The Pony were highly successful in 1990's before going their separate directions. Beth Harris plays rhythm guitar and her vocals are sweet and aching harmonies, bassist Glen May and drummer Brian Moeller round out the current incarnation of the group. The Hider's debut balances slow-burning love songs and full-on rockers with mesmerizing results.

Deep Cuts: Rock

The Cincinnati based band The Hiders music contains elements from alt-country and new alt-rock. Their 2006 release, Valentine, features acoustic, electric guitar and violin arrangements with haunting lead vocals and uplifting harmonies.

Valentine, ranges from alt-country to mainstream rock with shades of John Fogerty, Tom Petty, Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) and Neil Young. Lyrics and vocal performances range from bright, sardonic anthems in "Bones in the Well" and "Hideous Sunbeam" to stand out tracks "Persephone" and "Take Me Back". Thematically, the material deals with an unavoidable spiritual vacuums in the middle of a dim, plastic, superficial world. Valentine creates something musically immersive with a rock backbone.

Rocks Off Says: If Cat Power fronted Led Zeppelin, it might sound a lot like The Mountain - indie-rock classic-rock muscle. Rootsier than the trio's previous efforts, The Mountain feels like Erika Wennerstrom's voice has been imported from the '30s on the more acoustic songs, and so do her wistfully Biblical lyrics - midnight trains, wicked suns, pale moonlight, falling down on her knees to pray and so forth. Sturdy and eerie.

Coming Through?: The Bastards tear it up on V-Day Saturday night at Last Concert Cafe in Houston.

Fun Fact: The band appears on The Late Show With David Letterman tomorrow night.

Heartless Bastards (Austin/Cincinnati), The Mountain (Fat Possum) will be back in the Tri-State at the Madison Theater in late March 2009.
