Deep Cuts: Alt-Rock

The Hiders - Penny Harvest FieldThe Hiders' 2008 release "Penny Harvest Field" is a follow-up to their brilliant Valentine released in 2006. The Cincinnati based alt-rock act's musical influences seem to range from alt-country to mainstream rock containing Fogerty, Petty, Greenwood (Radiohead) and Neil Young. Their live sound is true to their studio sound which is kind of a seamless arrangement of guitar and vocal harmonies.

The band is fronted by a Cincinnati music veteran songwriter/guitarist Billy Alletzhauser who is a former member of Ohio indie rock group The Ass Ponys. The Pony were highly successful in 1990's before going their separate directions. Beth Harris plays rhythm guitar and her vocals are sweet and aching harmonies, bassist Glen May and drummer Brian Moeller round out the current incarnation of the group. The Hider's debut balances slow-burning love songs and full-on rockers with mesmerizing results.

Shows: Heartless Bastards @ Radio, Radio

Heartless Bastards
Ohio natives Heartless Bastards will be playing in Indy in February 18th 2012.

The Heartless Bastards are a power trio whose members have taken a no-frills approach to life and music. Singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Erika Wennerstrom and her brother were raised by a single mom in Dayton, Ohio.

Wennerstrom discovered her interest in music at a young age, but she always preferred writing her own songs as opposed to singing Disney tunes in school productions. Wennerstrom dropped out of her Catholic high school her senior year, and began concentrating more on music. After a few years of working dead-end jobs in Dayton, Wennerstrom moved to Cincinnati, where she met bassist Mike Lamping, who was working at his family's janitorial supply company.

Heartless Bastards - Finding Solutions

Wennerstrom and Lamping began performing around town as the Heartless Bastards, and quickly added drummer and pizza delivery man Kevin Vaughn to the lineup. The band began to tour, its music rooted in and heavily influenced by garage punk (MC5), indie rock (At the Drive-In), soul (Otis Redding), roots rock (Neil Young), and blues (Leadbelly). The Heartless Bastards eventually were signed to Fat Possum Records, which released both the band's 2005 debut, Stairs and Elevators, and it's break through follow-up album All This Time, a year later, continuing with The Mountain in 2009. Arrow, the group's new album will be released on February 14th 2012. The Heartless Bastards will also be appearing at the beautiful Madison on Northern Kentucky on February 17th and one of best venues in Indianapolis Radio, Radio on February 18th.

Deep Cuts: Psychobilly

The Cramps - Stay SickWhen you say rock 'n roll you mean the Cramps: part rock history, part sexy sleaze and all ragin' up into blisters.

The Cramps, founded in 1973 in Ohio, were one of the most genuinely controversial and well loved rock bands in America. Their unique blend of punk and rockabilly music was perfected at NYC's CBGB's in the late 1970's while playing with bands like The Ramones and The Talking Heads while being universally despised by music critics at the New York Times and Village Voice.

During their 30+ year run, the band played 1,000's of shows and released 13 albums. In 2009, The Cramps officially entered the history books when front man Lux Interior passed away as mainstream America shrugged and went back to staring blankly at it's iPhone.

Shows: Interpol@The Vogue 7/22

Interpol
Science and Rock had two radically different children: TMBG and Interpol.

Two good things come together July 22nd 2011: The Vogue, a spacious venue in scenic Broad Ripple and Interpol a one-of-a-kind rock band that has been making a mark in rock 'n roll since forming in 1997 in New York City.

The band features the music that My Chemical Romance's (Life on the Murder Scene) and The Dwarves years of cover art promises: an emotionally distant and intricate description of a brutal, yet posh, murder. Interpol's cover art for Our Love To Admire features just that peculiar concept - that a clinically detached and clinically depressed view of murder as a cold-hearted act that is as unavoidable as it is instinctual.

Opening for Interpol are San Fransisco based Soft Moon who sound like a an even "colder wave" version of The Faint in a musical row with the Bau Haus.

Interpol will also be at Bogart's on Short Vine in Cincinnati 7/06!

Off The Shelf: Hard Rock Heroes

Hard Rock HeroesThis 240-page graphic novel was released in March of 2010 by Blue Water Productions who also published Female Force: Margaret Thatcher, Logan's Run and have a Joan Jett comic coming out in June. This Hard Rock book features the biggest, dumbest bands in mainstream rock from 1980 to 1990.

This book, based on the unauthorized biographies originally put together by Todd Loren who was killed at age 32 in San Diego in 1992, covers that special time in music when big hair and men-in-women's make-up ruled mainstream rock with a curling iron, mopey choruses and dopey-eyed fans who affirmed the fact that yes, every rose really does have a thorn, player.

While this humble writer (and a few others) ran screaming from Glam Rock to bands like Dinosaur, Slayer, Ministry and the Butthole Surfers - America was dominated by bands featured in Hard Rock Heroes: Skid Row, Poison, Guns 'N Roses, Megadeth and Tesla - the absolute worst of cock/glam rock scene.

The book is terrible, but it's terrible in a way that will make your sides aches as you watch Ozzy mistakenly scarf on a live bat in Iowa or the boys from Poison "show just how much heart a band can have". There are also a few treats/fun facts for fans of Metallica, Faith No More and Pantera in the book which has art by many different artists including Dave Biggs (Megadeth), Lyndal Ferguson (Snotley Crue) and Mark Erickson (Black Sabbath and Ozzy).
